I WAS pleased to read in last Thursday's Bolton News that at long last Farnworth Health Centre is to be revamped in order to provide improved health services to the town’s population.

It would appear the NHS Bolton Clinical Commissioning Group have finally realised how poor the health services are in Farnworth. I must say this project is long overdue and I am disappointed to hear that work will not start until December this year and construction could take another 12 months.

Correct me if I am wrong but at present apart from a GP's surgery and pharmacy there seems to be hardly any other health services available at this centre. On the other hand the rest of Bolton is well served with large health centres including Bolton One, Waters Meet, Pikes Lane, Breightmet Health Centre to name but a few, with the result that Farnworth's residents have usually have to travel miles in order to receive health treatment for their ailments.

Farnworth Health Centre is a large, fairly modern building, centrally located with adequate car parking across the road on the Asda car park and is only a few minutes walk from the bus station. I cannot understand why plans are even being considered to build a new health centre in the town rather than refurbishing and/or expanding the existing health centre. Surely the NHS has enough financial problems and should make full use of the existing building on Frederick Street if this is a viable option.
