AS a lifelong trade unionist and socialist I was privileged to attend the recent awards ceremony at Bolton Socialist Club. We are fortunate to have such a unique club in our town, it is believed to be the oldest independent socialist club in Britain.

At the annual ceremony awards are given to people in recognition of their achievements in campaigning for social justice.

TV actress, Julie Hesmondalgh was recognised as someone who has consistently supported a variety of worthwhile causes ranging from support for refugees to support for people with disabilities.

Veteran trade unionist, Brian Northey was recognised for a lifelong commitment to unions and campaigning. Brian was for many years a leading union official in the local engineering industry as well as having a key role on Bolton Trades Union Council. In recent years, Brian has been active on behalf of the North West Pensioners Association.

Public service trade unionist and a personal friend of mine, Bernadette Gallagher was recognised for her contribution to trade unionism in our town. She is not only the Branch Secretary of Bolton Unison, the town's biggest union branch with over 6,000 members she also serves on the union's National Executive. She deservedly has a reputation as someone who is strong minded and a real fighter. People may not always agree with her but they always respect her.

I can only say well done to Bernadette, Brian and Julie, three individuals who have all contributed a great deal for the benefit of others and would be some of the last people to expect or seek an award or recognition. They have always been an inspiration to others. It was a lovely evening and all three of them fully deserve to be recognised.
