I WISH to respond to Mr Walsh’s letter on Monday, May 9 "Results are a warning."

Local Labour councillors worked tirelessly over the years, months and weeks in the run-up to our most recent election and their victories are well deserved.

I couldn’t be more in agreement that the results are a warning.

Just like the London Mayoral election showed, negative campaigning turns people off, and this seems to have been also at the core of the Lib Dem campaign in Bolton – knocking our town instead of offering unique ideas to better everyone’s opportunities.

There would be no problem whatsoever if they would offer real solutions to the issues facing local people, as Labour councillors did beforehand and throughout the campaign, in radio interviews, face-to-face, and literature I got through my door.

Bolton Labour Council is tackling rising homelessness due to the Tory Government’s cuts to council services, tacking child poverty by offering every primary school child free breakfasts and affordable school meals, and increasing opportunities for our young people with investment in education, training and apprenticeships across the Borough.

Ukip, the Tories, and Liberal Democrats said no to these proposals, but Labour councillors pushed forward, not wanting to play political games, but put the people of Bolton first.

These election results are a warning – it’s a message to the those parties to stop playing at politics and start taking the issues facing hard working Boltonians seriously.
