THE debate on the EU is beginning to warm, with accusations being made from both sides.

Alan Johnson from the Green Party complained that he and others at the Green Party’s stall in Victoria Square, campaigning for the UK to remain in the EU, felt threatened by campaigners wanting an exit vote. If he was so threatened he should have laid a complaint with the police.

But it’s the ludicrous claims made by Mr Johnson, the Greens and others on the remain campaigners side of the debate that has prompted me to write. He points out employment rights and action on climate change that has come out of the EU. Others also point to EU human rights legislation, Health and safety regulations, food labelling, recycling, environmental legislation and so on that have, it seems also come from the EU.

Firstly, this twaddle is extremely patronising to the British public. What Mr Johnson, the Green party and others campaigning for the UK to remain a member of the EU are saying is: That 'you' the citizens of the United Kingdom are not capable of deciding your own future, your own employment laws, your own environmental regulations, health and safety guidelines and so on. Secondly, what these people are really saying is: That unelected, ‘misanthropic,’ bureaucrats, technocrats and judges in Brussels are the only people qualified and sensible enough to make all these fundamental decisions for you. That will directly affect the lives of every British citizen in the UK.

Reading between the lines it is quite obvious those who want to remain in the EU believe the British people are all thick and are unable to make these important decisions for themselves.

To which I say to those who are undecided “Why don’t you show those who want to rule (and ruin) your lives with your own hard earned money that they are the ones who are incapable and wrong?”
