THE Bolton News did a great job in bringing the injustice of the former chief executive of Bolton Council, Paul Najsarek severance pay to the attention of readers but there have only been two responses in the Letters page.

The inference is that the HR Department of Bolton Council is as inept as the current controlling body as it appears that no probationary period was included in the contract. I understand Councillor Hayes’ query concerning the tax free sum which I believe in normal circumstances could be as much as £30k without payment of income tax but having been told that Paul Najsarek left of his own accord he cannot be due payment in lieu or a tax free sum.

The worrying thing is that in the Bolton News July 2, the Council Leader was reported to say ‘the money was paid as a result of Council policy based upon Mr Najsarek’s age and years of public sector service — as well as cash for a notice period paid in lieu’

This suggests that all top managers at Bolton (and maybe further afield) are entitled to these payments under similar circumstances. What kind of balderdash is this? The rules should be the same for everyone.
