BOLTON Market is dying on it's feet and the recent re-vamp is the reason why.

The fruit veg and fish markets are superb, probably the best in the North. But the re-vamp of the indoor market and the pathetic excuse for an outdoor market, leave a lot to be desired.

I visited Bury Market recently, the first time in quite a while. Wow! The bustling outdoor market is probably the best example of what an outdoor market should be, with "proper" market stalls. And it was heaving with shoppers.

Bolton Council needs to get its act together, unless it wants to oversee another once great market bite the dust. And they have the perfect, once in a lifetime opportunity when Moor Lane Bus Station is demolished. A super outdoor market could be built on this space, with proper market stalls, similar to Bury.

Bolton is primarily a market town — and there's nowt wrong with that. These in-office-too-long councillors need to understand that. The demand is there for a good outdoor market — look at Bury (please). It's what shoppers want.

But of course, nothing must get in the way of the university. What is it with this council and the university?
