NEW cars don’t need an MOT for fours years says Chris Grayling, Transport Secretary.

Obviously being a layman he can’t possibly know how many miles can be clocked up in that time. Cars come into our garage with 30,000 to 300,000 miles in that three year period.

My colleagues and I are not really happy about this and think it may be over-riding the safety factor, with such bad roads and motorway speeds, roadworks etc. damage cannot be seen visually.

I and my colleagues personally would not take our families on distances with these sort of mileages without a proper MOT test and to not be inspected for four years would over-ride the safety factor.

It would really surprise you the amount of damage after two years with a lot of drivers and such pathetic roads and the bad standards of road repairs. Common sense would really be for safety every two years and most MOT testers would agree, and Mr Grayling's comments regarding “rip off garages” — I would think all reputable ones should be suing him on the safety factor alone. The cost of an average MOT is £35 to £40, not a lot to pay against the cost of a life.
