THE guidance from the Government relating to pre-election purdah is quite clear.

During purdah, the use of Government property (including local government property) for electioneering by candidates is prohibited.

In relation to the May 4 GMCA mayoral election, purdah began on April 13.

It is clear therefore that the Labour event on April 22 breached this rule.

Contrast this with the visit of Nigel Farage on May 25, 2016. Purdah for the EU referendum started on May 27.

Council officers were therefore out of order in asking Nigel to leave the Town Hall because of Purdah (I was there and that’s what happened).

Typical Bolton Council. One rule for the Labour party — a different one for everybody else.
