MAY I respond to the letter “Signs are a waste” Name and address supplied, June 1, which criticised a number of matters pertaining to the Labour party. May I defend the unprecedented investment that went into the National Health Service, schools and Sure Start along with the minimum wage with a rise every year and the restored link of pensions to earnings.

Many in Labour and those who voted for the party remain proud of the achievements of the Labour government.

Regarding the economy; no longer is it as simple as saying that the private sector creates wealth and, as if on a separate island the public sector, part of the state, spends the wealth.

We know from the last banking crash and economic downturn that private markets need a state that can credibly regulate markets. A strong state can protect wealth creation and enterprise. Many in Labour do not believe that members of the other main parties do indeed want what we want. For example, we see nowhere near enough commitment to real social security for our citizens, especially for those whose families have paid their taxes.

Instead we see support for quite a harsh regime in the round these days be it those with the misfortune of unemployment, parents raising disabled children or people suffering with mental health. We see tax breaks for the rich and a widening gap in income inequality which we despise. Lastly the letter writer complains about the 20mph speed restrictions in our borough in residential and school areas. This was supported by the opposition parties here. The evidence shows that even if just some cars keeps to 20mph others behind slow down and fewer children are killed on the roads. The decimation of the police budget including police transport is something I despise myself.
