I READ with interest the story concerning the three men who lost their lives at the Third Battle of Ypres.

I should like to add my uncle's name to these and the many others from Bolton who were killed in this dreadful war.

Thomas Barber was my father's brother. He belonged to the 1/5th Battalion of the Loyal North Lancs. Regiment. He is recorded as having been killed at the Third Battle of Ypres on July 31, 1917 although, of course, as his body has never been found, this could just be a date used for official purposes and he could have died any time from this date to November when the fighting for this particular part of the conflict, ceased.

His name is to be found on the Menin Gate, as it is also on Bolton's own memorial stone in Queens Park.

Some years ago I went to Ypres to find his name. There is a catalogue situated in a hole in the wall safe which gives directions as to how to find your relative. The inscription for my uncle is: 'Thomas Barber, aged 20, son of Matthew and Margaret Barber, 16 Craddock Street, Bolton'.

It seemed very strange to be standing in a foreign country reading the names and address of my grand parents.
