WITH reference to Cllr John Walsh's letter regarding voter identification requirements. 'Wrong to stop ID plan' September 26.

Whilst, on paper, this looks a reasonable proposal not everyone has a driving licence or passport, so what other forms of identification will be acceptable — I have yet to see a list.

There is a very clear danger that many perfectly respectable and eligible voters may find themselves excluded from the democratic process if they do not have the required documentation, and we must ask what proposals are in place such as, for example, a national ID card system, to ensure everyone eligible has access to the democratic process.

I suspect this may be the key issue which has provoked the recent action by our Labour councillors, but it would be helpful if they could elaborate on the reasons for their decision not to partake in the trials to dispel any speculation as to why the decision was made.
