TWO weeks ago a Conservative Councillor for Astley Bridge angered residents after he called for the chapel at Astley Bridge cemetery to be demolished.
His suggestion was to demolish the building to three feet above the ground and use it as a reflective garden.
Hundreds of residents supported a petition two years ago for it be converted into a library and community cafe. He and other councillors were nowhere to be seen.
It’s typical of this current council, they would rather let good historic buildings in Bolton go to wrack and ruin (or call for demolition) rather than redevelop them. A council officer said it would cost an estimated £130,000 to bring it back into use. We’ll soon have nothing left in Bolton.
We’re now looking into viable ways to bring it back into use. Don’t let them knock this beautiful chapel down. Please.
