IT HAS come to our attention recently that reporter Steven Thompson referred to his tuna-eating friend as a vegetarian. We would like to tell you that vegetarians don't eat fish!
Two main reasons people become vegetarians and vegans is because they don't want to support the dreadful suffering that farm animals endure behind the closed doors of the intensive factory farming industry and also because they want to eat a healthier diet.
This is a definition of a vegetarian, as stated by the Vegetarian Society: “Someone who lives on a diet of grains, pulses, nuts, seeds, vegetables and fruits with, or without, the use of dairy products and eggs. A vegetarian does NOT eat any meat, poultry, game, fish, shellfish or byproducts of slaughter."
It is common for people who refrain from eating meat, yet still eat fish and also meat by-products, to call themselves vegetarian, but it doesn't mean they are one.
Maybe Steve would like to alert his friend to her error, and also suggest she looks at www.vegsoc.org, or www.viva.org.uk, as both have helpful advice on becoming a vegetarian (a proper one!).
