Let them know how important our libraries are

ON BEHALF of Bolton Unison and the Save Bolton Libraries Campaign, I recently contacted all 60 councillors in Bolton to ask for their views on the current review of nine branch libraries and potential library closures. I would like to publicly thank all those councillors who have made the effort to get in touch, either by replying directly to me or through contact with individual members of the campaign group.

Many local councillors from all three parties have expressed support for libraries and appear genuinely concerned about the potential impact of library closures. This is very much appreciated especially given that library workers are very concerned both for their jobs and the future of the service that they provide. It is very much regretted that based on their responses (and in some cases lack of responses) some councillors appear totally disinterested in the future of our libraries. The petitioning outside local libraries has been very effective and attracted a great deal of public support. However it is clear that a great many library users are unaware of the possibility that their local library may close. I would like to remind all library users to participate in the consultation process, which ends on May 20.
