PLANS to charge motorists up to £5 a day to drive into Manchester city centre are opposed by four out of five city businesses, according to a new survey.
Half of the 1,246 firms polled said they would be less likely to invest in the area if the congestion charge was introduced, while 95 per cent believed it was a revenue-raising scheme for local government.
The results of the survey - conducted on behalf of property firm Peel Holdings, which owns the Trafford Centre and Manchester Airport - come just days after The Bolton News revealed prestige car firm, Williams BMW, is moving its headquarters out of Manchester city centre and to a purpose-built £10 million complex in Bolton, because of the likely effect of the charge on business.
