A £35 million investment in the bus network across Greater Manchester has been rubber stamped.

Andy Scholey, the newly appointed managing director for operations at bus company, First, made the announcement at a special stakeholder's event.

He said the cash would be pumped into the service irrespective of any decision the Government makes on a bid for cash by the Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Authority (GMPTA).

The GMPTA has submitted a bid to the Department for Transport, for funding to help it develop and introduce plans to combat traffic congestion in Manchester.

The bid involves a major investment in public transport and a Greater Manchester congestion charging scheme, which would target the most congested routes at their busiest times. First will introduce 200 new buses in a number of phases, starting in 2008.

Mr Scholey said: "As the new MD in Manchester, a core part of my mission is to continue building on the highly successful partnerships that are already delivering service improvements for customers across the county. The fleet renewal programme is key in this and therefore these new double deck buses will come to Manchester whatever the outcome of the bid.

No, all new vehicles have already been allocated to First Bolton there are 11 new double decks to be used on the number 8 route which were allocated in July, but there are now no new vehicle allocations due for Bolton until 2010.

Are you sure about that. Firstly Bolton was to get the new next generation trambuses for route 8 - they are now going to Chester (again a decision made by First) and then the 8 was to get some of the brand new double deckers that First are buying and guess what - they are going to Rochdale on route 17. Bolton for the next 3 years are going to be getting cast off from Firsts other depots across the COUNTRY!! and just from across North Manchester!!!!

Bus fares are going to be any cheaper - firstly they will use this as an excuse to raise the fares within the next couple of months - how else is the 35million going to be found, plus they will also raise the fares in next couple of months on the whim that fuel costs are going up - remember it is now 90USD a barrel for crude oil!!!!!!

Again it sounds like great news - but when you look behind the facade what good news is there. Bus routes in Bolton - especially ones operated by First are completely under threat - unless of course it is an Overground route. There is a distnct lack of a bus network in Bolton nowadays - will this money go to help to restore it - NO!!! Bolton has had its fair share on new buses over the last couple of years so no more investment there - just cast offs!!!

Where is the good news here??? I would love it to be completely good news but looking between the lines there is none - just a PR exercise!

The people of Bolton want is a 20p standard bus fare for all journeys. This would fill the buses and mean people would rather leave their cars at home than use them to make local trips. High bus fares by profiteering bus companies means poor people can’t use them, more people prefer to use cars, the council tries to limit car usage by charging for parking which means fewer people use the town centre. This p1ss-poor Thatcherite Labour Government that is more concerned with the profits of the large transport companies than the poverty in a large town like Bolton. The bus companies have only one policy to maximise profits for shareholders. It is the job of politicians to restrict and control these companies for the public good. Now there’s an old fashioned idea that Gordon ‘excuse-me-while-I-p
ick-this-bogey’ Brown might like to think about. It used to be so old Labour.

The £35million is nothing extra. It is 'First' bus renewing there fleet as they should. It is part of Andy Scholey's job as MD for operations at 'First' to put the best spin on it. There's nothing to get exited about here.
