Landlords rubbish smoke ban survey

A SURVEY which claims the majority of pub bosses do not want the smoking ban to be overturned has been rubbished by landlords in Bolton.

Research by drink firm, Britvic and trade magazine, The Publican, shows 73 per cent of people surveyed said they would not back moves to reverse the controversial law.

But the findings was last night questioned by Bolton pub chiefs.

John Jewitt, landlord of The Man of Scythe in Churchgate, said: "I am amazed at the survey and I would like to see the finer details of it.

"Pubs in towns in the north of England like Bolton, which are not in the town centres, are having a rough time of it. It is affecting the level of trade.

"Personally I would not like to see the ban overturned, but I am lucky, I am in the town centre and have a beer garden. But I can't see the majority of landlords having this stance."

Chris Hayes, landlord of The Howcroft Inn in Pool Street, Bolton, said the ban had seen trade drop - despite the pub having a smoking shelter.

He said: "I disagree with the findings. This is a traditional pub, not like the bigger chain pubs and pubs which are really restaurants. Trade has fallen dramatically and the traditional pub atmosphere has gone."

Carol Bretherton, the manageress of the Ainsworth Arms in Halliwell said it was too early to say whether the smoking ban should be overturned.

She said: "Because of the mild weather smokers have gone outside and trade has been the same. We will know more once the cold weather starts."

The Publican editor Caroline Nodder said some pubs had attracted more customers, sold more soft drinks and more food because of the smoking ban.

I have no doubt whatsoever, that the results of this 'research' have been fixed. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to see how trade in pubs has been affected.

I would love to see smokers put back into pubs. I am fed up with all the cigarette ends in the street. I am fed up with walking past crowds of smokers blocking the pavement. I am fed up with the noise coming from smokers outside pubs and in pub gardens. I don't want to walk past smelly smokers and smelly drinkers. They belong together, so put them together back inside the pub.

A survey done by a soft drinks company..The Government couldn't have commissioned a more biased survey !

Laughable to think people will believe this !

Financial Times, 17th October 2007 stated that Britvic sales had declined during the summer?

I can see both sides of this story, from the point of view of the report and the local pub landlords.
The majority of the people who smoke are less intelligent, less sophisticated and less well-off. As a town Bolton is poorer than most other towns in this country and if you took this site as a sample of the people of Bolton itself you would realise that intelligence and sophistication aren't exactly the strong points of the majority of Bolton's inhabitants.
So while I can see that overall, pub landlords in this country don't want the smoking ban to be revoked, here in Numptyville where the inhabitants are a decade or two behind in the notion that smoking in pubs does nobody any good, the smoking ban is seen as a bad idea.

This report is shear nonsense and just publicity for the soft drink company. One question I should like to ask is.. If this survey is right and pubs are not suffering at the introduction of the smoking ban ( Which I seriously doubt.) Why didn't we have non smoking pubs years ago?
The cigar smoking Roy Castle has a lot to answer for. He did smoke cigars, before anyone disputes this I once worked at the Queens theatre in Blackpool and I saw him smoke several cigars.

Beware of taking a single event and attributing it to being the single cause of another event or effect.

There have been five (I think)interest rate rises this year and a person with an average mortgage is maybe around £100 per month worse off per month. Could it not be that also this may have had something to do with the drop in trade?

As a cigar smoker Roy Castle was misguided in thinking that passive smoking gave rise to his lung cancer. Is that what you are saying? Prior to all the publicity surrounding Roys very public demise, passive smoking was unheard of. Now it is proported to be one of the reasons smoking in public has been banned. As you state there are many causes of lung cancer. It has still not been proven that second hand smoke is a major cause of lung cancer. Yet a draconion law is now in place on the back of this misinformation. No body has told me that if this were a law that is so neccessary now, why we didn't have a greater number of non smoking pubs( by brewery or landlords choice) for years(if the demand now is so great)

If it has not been proven that passive smoking causes lung cancer, why bring in a smoking ban? No autopsy was carried out on Roy before his death, passive smoking was purely based on his belief.

The smoking ban has done wonders for my social life. I now get to invite more smoking friends over to my place, a gesture that's reciprocated, we stay at home, drink, smoke and play games (pool, darts, cards etc.) The drinks are cheaper, it's warm inside and no one feels the need to be ostracised. My sympathy lies with the pubs, but there's no way we'll give in to the government.

Better safe than sorry.

Eg, we do not know that passive smoke causes cancer, but we do know that no smoke definately does not cause cancer.

So until we know for certain whether it does or does not, then a ban in public places in implemented.

I was privileged to see the fabulous drummer Eric Delaney perform last weekend in Horwich, this man is eighty three years old and after performing in clubs for seventy years is still an extreamly spritely man and a wonderful performer. Passive smoking does him no harm.

On a slightly different subject, since smoking on aircraft was banned (to save fuel ) the air in the cabin is only recirculated. When smoking was allowed on flights the cabin air was changed every 3 to 6 minutes. Ever wonder why you seem to come back off holiday with a stinking cold?

Oh My God!

Are they a concentrated amount that enter through windows? or are they not filtered through the great outdoors first?

And what about incinerators?
