DETAILS have been announced for a Holocaust memorial service to remember the millions murdered by the Nazis during the Second World War.

Last year, the service was scrapped in Bolton in favour of a memorial service to all victims of genocide.

The decision sparked outrage across the town.

It has been reinstated this year and will take place in the Festival Hall, Bolton Town Hall, at 3pm on Sunday.

The service will be led by the Mayor of Bolton, Cllr Barbara Ronson.

She said: "Imagine if it had happened here. What would it have felt like to be a victim, or to be a survivor now?

"We also need to ask ourselves why it happened, and why similar things are still happening in places such as Darfur."

Students from Turton Media Arts College and representatives from various faiths, and councillors, will give readings at the service.

The ceremony will also include a silent tribute when children from Rumworth School will light remembrance candles and Rabbi Joseph Lever will say prayers.

Cllr Linda Thomas, who will be giving a reading for Bolton, said: "This memorial service is to remember and reflect on the genocide of the Second World War and some of the other terrible things which have happened since.

"These are events that should never be forgotten.

"These are events that we cannot afford to forget."

Chamber choir the Brixi singers will present the Holocaust Cantata, Songs from the Camps and Gabriel Faure Requiem at Bolton Parish Church at 7.30pm.

Free tickets are available from Bolton Interfaith Council on 01204 546110 and on the door.

This year's Genocide Memorial Day will be held on June 22.
