A GIANT inflatable ballot box was hoisted up at the Middlebrook Retail Park by campaigners demanding a referendum on the new EU treaty.

Business chiefs behind the national cross-party "I Want A Referendum" campaign organised the stunt to publicise their poll of 77,000 homes in Ruth Kelly's Bolton-west constituency on the treaty.

Residents will be asked whether they think the Government should hold a referendum on the treaty and whether they think Britain should adopt the document.

Ballot papers were due to be delivered to people in Bolton-west over the next few days and campaigners are holding similar polls in nine other constituencies across the country to highlight their cause.

They are angry because Government promised a referendum on the EU Constitution, which was abandoned in 2005 after being rejected by voters in France and The Netherlands.

Gordon Brown is refusing to let people vote on the new Lisbon Treaty, which has replaced it, rejecting claims the two documents are largely the same.

Among campaigners at the Middlebrook launch was Tony Blair's former economic advisor and Labour Party member, Derek Scott.

He said: "Arguing these documents are different is frankly a nonsense.

"The Labour manifesto had a very specific committment that there would be a referendum so I find this extraordinary.

"These campaign referendums will show people are concerned and we already have more than 30,000 registered supporters."

Mr Scott added that he believed the treaty would hand more powers to Brussels.

Its provisions include scrapping national vetoes, giving the European Court of Justice more powers and effectively creating an EU foreign minister.

People in Bolton West have until February 25 to return their ballot papers with the results due by the end of the month.

Anyone under 53 has never had a say on whether or not we should be in the EU and those over 53 voted to join a common market not a political super state. I suspect if that had been the proposal it would have been thrown out.

It is enivetible that we will be given a vote on pulling out of the EU at some point in the future, global economics will see to it that this happens.
However, it would make sense to ditch this dead weight now before the going gets really heavy and we just can't carry it any longer.

This government is not interested in the people, except to rip them off with various tax levies. The Houses of Parliament is the most corrupt house in this land. MPs paying thousands of tax payers money to their own relations. The rich getting richer, and they say there's no divide.

We were promised a referendum by Labour and that promise should be kept. I have always voted for Ruth Kelly but I will not vote for her or Labour ever again unless we have a referendum.

This government don't want the people of this once great country to have a say because they have already 'sold' this country out. We, the people, need to get rid of these idiots now before things go pass the point of no return.

On the European Constitution - never promised a referendum on the Treaty.

Play on words maybe but The European Constitution died a death with the help of the French and Dutch. This is basically same but repackaged as a Treaty and the Government has NEVER promised a referendum on this Treaty!!

Get real Amosc 99. Even the Labour dominated Scrutiny Committe said it was the Constitution by another name. The good news is that, even without a referendum at this point, Britain is moving inexorably towards the EU exit door. A referendum now would enable Brown and his acolytes like Kelly to show some honesty, but the lack of a referendum wil not stop the British people ultimately getting what they want, which is free trade, not political union.

You get real - if you think we can exist outside the EU, nowadays then you are sadly mistaken.

Remember we no longer have an Empire to sustain our spending, we no longer have any industries to bring money in, we no longer have a good credit rating overseas due to mishandling of the countries monies not just by Brown and Darling but by past government chancellors going back 70 years! If we leave the EU we will be bankrupt within 10 years and swallowed up either by the EU or by another union (the States!!!!!!) - which one would you rather have.

Anyway - did yyou not read my posts properly enough!!!! I did actually say...

Which country was almost bankrupt after WWII - did you not realise that??? Hence reason for the break up of the Empire, selling the countries gold cheaply, the struggle to keep institutions such as the state pension and the NHS solvent (although in real terms thay have bben bankrupt for over 25 years!!!!). The EU - no matter what its problems - has kept the country afloat for over 20 years!!!!!

Remember if it was n't for the EU granst we would be the sick man of Europe today just like The Ottoman Empire (Turkey) was over 150 years ago!!

David Lonsadle - I work for the EU so don't tell me how my job works. Yes I am pro- EU!!! BUT I also know it has it problems but many of the UK's problems is of its own doing, due to so-called self interest which in turn has actually back-fired on the UK and in turn is letting the people of the UK down BUT the Govt, press and other media easily make ill of the EU as it is a huge power-house with no proper PR and as such it does let itself down by not defending itself and showing what good it does actually do for ALL communities.

If one listens to anti-EU - you have to remember how much they are milking the EU for just to tell you its a badly run system!!!!!!!

All in all I agree on the majority of what you say with regards to MEP's and how it operates iself - but you have to remember that the UK Gvt is Just as bad, if not worse for scandallous operations and for letting the majority of it voters down (even on a more local scale - just look at Bolton Council and how it disreagrds its voters over many aspects of local life yet giving themselves outrageous pay-rises on the excuse that it brings them into lines with other councils and for the "good job" they have done for the town!)

Anyway, if the EU is a dictator, then wouldn't we have bee brought into line long before and why haven't we been brought into line now. Why do we have European Elections - if you do not vote in them then its your own fault for making the EU as bad as it is!!! Sure there are unelected members within the EU - but how many unelected members are there in Parliament (e.g. Spin doctors and within the cab inet itself!!! + what about the House of Lords which actually pass the laws in this country how many of those have you voted for???).

If I remember correctly Germany and Austria did NOT have dictators in the C20. Firstly they were kingdoms but when they disappeared they were democratic countries - Hitler was voted in for his principles for the people - Austrai created a pact with the German political leader (Hitler) in which there were common markets created and as a whole Austria felt okay in giving their power to Germany - for the good of the people (Anschluss) - agreed by the people (is that not democratic enough!!).

before sprouting all that you have - look at oor own democracy before calling the EU - ours is just as bad, if not worse!!! So much for the cradle of democracy!

Yes indeed. And who ensured this country went bankrupt. Why, the USA, which called in its loans to us (run up while we fought the war, almost alone, on their behalf until their belated entry) as soon as they realised we wanted to set up an "evil" socialist welfare state. And who do the promoters of this ridiculous referendum (in fact a covert anti EU tactic) want us to get even cosier with? Why the USA of course. As the 51st state, they assure us, we will be far more independent than as an equal member of a European union.
