A RETIRED teacher died after a fall at her home, an inquest heard.

Margaret Mallon, aged 80, lived alone but regularly had carers visit her house in Lee Lane, Horwich.

On October 12 last year carer Hamda Jarboura found Mrs Mallon at the bottom of the stairs.

The pensioner, who suffered from Alzheimer's and epilepsy, was taken to the Royal Bolton Hospital in a confused state.

She had a fractured pelvis and while she was in hospital her condition deteriorated. She died on October 31.

The cause of death was bronchopneumonia, caused by immobility.

Her son, Francis Mallon, told Bolton Coroners' Court that his mother was a teacher for most of her working life, and taught at infant and junior schools.

She retired in 1983 for health reasons.

Assistant deputy coroner, Christopher Welton, recorded a verdict of accidental death.

He said: "This was an elderly lady needing assistance but still very independent.

"She had a fall and no-one will know what brought about that fall.

"The start of the chain of events was an accident."
