Squash champ reunited with trophy
A POPULAR Bolton sportsman has been reunited with one of his many sporting trophies, thanks to The Bolton News.
This cup was found in a skip by a builder clearing the former gym and sports club building in Mawdsley Street which was once owned by Bolton bodybuilder Ken Heathcote.
It was handed in at The Bolton News' Churchgate offices by its finder, who wanted to remain anonymous, in a bid to return it to its rightful owner.
Dirty and a little battered, with the figure on its lid missing his racquet, the trophy is engraved on its base with the title "The Jonah Barrington Trophy".
Barrington was an English-born Irish squash player, considered one of the sport's all-time greats, who won the British Open title six times.
Also etched into the trophy is the name of person who won it between 1976 and 1981 - and each year it was one "D.Tobutt".
The Bolton News was able to match up the name with that of squash player, marathon runner and health and fitness therapist Dougie Tobutt.
Dougie is well known for running Tobutt Sports shop in Astley Bridge and he was delighted to be reunited with his lost
Dougie said: "I just assumed that the trophy was still being played for each year and that someone else was holding it.
"I played squash for many years until an ankle injury in the early 1980s meant I had to undergo an operation.
"When I recovered, I found it easier to train for my marathons than to get back into squash - although I often think that I could perhaps start playing again as a veteran."
