Ban on shutters in Farnworth is possible

METAL security shutters on shops and takeaways could be outlawed to stop Bolton "looking like Beirut".

Councillors want store owners to install more attractive grille-style shutters instead of the older plain metal varieties.

And they have asked officers to consider amending planning policies to make it a condition that all new shop developments across the borough could only install grilles.

Cllr Walter Hall, Conservative for Bradshaw, said some shop owners had already started to use the modern shutters and that he hoped others would follow their example.

"We do recognise that security is important but the metal shutters are awful, they make Bolton look like Beirut," he said.

"On some stretches of St George's Road and Tonge Moor Road there are loads of takeaways that are closed during the day and the metal shutters make the town look deserted."

Cllr Hall said the issue arose during discussions between members of Bolton Council's planning committee and that outlets which already have older metal shutters would not be affected.

Planning committee member Cllr Nick Peel, Labour member for Tonge, is also backing the plans.

He said: "We have to create a balance between the shop owners and members of the community, and we need to make sure they don't feel like they live on an industrial estate."

However, Julie Charlston, who owns Paul and Julie's Pantry in Bridgeman Place, Bolton, said the plans were unfair.

The 44-year-old said: "It's absolutely ludicrous. If we have the see-through shutters, my till and all my stock will be on display to thieves.

"There have already been three butty shops broken into round here quite recently."

Gerry McLaughlin of Bolton Gate security installation, said the grille shutters are much more expensive.

Mr McLaughlin said: "A 2-metre by 2-metre metal shutter would cost £1,300, whereas a grille shutter would cost more than twice that at £2,700."

If crime wasn't rife and on the increase. Then maybe many of these shops would install these grilles voluntarily.

I suspect Beirut is proabbly a loit safer and more pleasant than Farniworth these days. How about a ban on vandals, burglars, muggers, robbers, gangsters, arsonists (of the wheely bin, the shed and the car variety)and drunken louts hanging aroudn the streets? Hmmm let me see - oh yes, we already have laws against those. Not that you can tell.

What planet are thses councillors living on?

No law and order anymore (unless you are a chocaholic), the scum rule the streets while the police sit on their useless backsides. If the useless sods that run this country actually did something beneficial and reinstated punishments that fit the crime and some discipline, then these shutters wouldn't be neccessary in the first place.

Well it'll just look like a bombsite then with all the broken glass around.

I wonder who will pay the shopper keepers extra insurance costs?

OldBoltonian has it right. Perhaps if the Police did what we employ them to do there would be no requirement for shutters of any description.

Can anyone remember a time when shops didn't have to be defended in this way? I wish I'd been alive back then to see it...

On the other hand, I don't really want to be living in an area where the shops are covered in metal shutters and the bus stops are made of concrete because the lawless rule.

Needs must, I guess.

I think this is totally ridiculous!. People need to protect there properties otherwise they will have their windows put through all the time by idiots. Thats the whole point of having them security shutters.

What a crock of cr!p. A ban on shutters, I've never heard such tosh in my life.

While we're at it, lets put a ban on garage doors!

The Bolton Council are the laughing stock of Manchester, I hope they realise this before they drive everyone out of this godforsaken place.

So who gave planning permission for all these take aways then?

Each time I come home to Bolton and look around it is more and more depressing. Tonge Moor is a dump. Thicketford Road absolutely strewn with litter and yes it does resemble a war torn area.
Where I live now, there is none of this. The corner shop or any other shop in the area has no shutters, and there is a coke vending machine outside which has never been vandalised. I'm in the same country, but why is there a difference?
Surely the council is to answer for some of these problems.

The shop on Ainsworth Lane ? A pal at the Council rang me. Unbelievable what's gone on. Its been ripped out internally.....liter
ally, leaving only a shell with the roof holding it together.

Not allowed to say who or where the builders are from, it might be deemed racist and get me in trouble with the thought Police.

Bolton Daves qualified to talk about Tonge Moor. Wont say too much apart from the Council contract was extremely generous Le Roi, bought a Bentley each for the kids and a couple of antique Purdeys for me.The Castle was partly refurbished on a couple of weeks profit from me and the Lads, not a pink champagne in sight.

But, yeah Dave, your not wrong. But when you think of the money that has literally be poured into the area, along with others in Bolton. The state of it is a disgrace. As with most projects that have come from a Labour Group, they've never been thought out and no action plan for afterwords. One of things they always forget is people make areas, not millions wasted in grants. For some reason, they seem to think, "well, we'll throw a few zillion at it and everything will be OK and our work is done."

The reality is what you see today.

Must dash, the Agusta's arrived. On our way to collect the cheque from the Town Hall. Asked for cash as they're a bit dodgy, but Securicor didn't have an artic available.

I can remember when it was possible to stroll on a summers night, looking at goods in windows anywhere.
Why not now?
Scumbags, drunks, thieves, need I go on.
What do they get, a smack on the hand.
I don't blame the shop owners for having shutters, they are trying to earn a living.
If they now have to get these new ones,it is an advert for the thieves to weigh up layouts of shops etc.
Then trade will go away from Bolton,& will become a ghost town, as it is slowly turning into.
The first politician, that stands up & says we are reviewing the sentences that is handed out, & gives proper ones, get's my vote.
Watch Sky, see how the USA catch the bad guys, & the sentences that is handed out.
The English programmes,1 drunk & disorderly man fined £80.
It took 4 policeman to hancuff him, transport to the nick, then more police to book him in.
Sometimes ambulance staff have to turn out as well.
£80 doesn't cover these wages.
I will not vote in May, Bolton council are a joke!

Happy days Lilly ?

I believe Market Street Farnworth was quiet full of a summers evening, with couples and family's strolling and window shopping dreaming of that one day.

25 years ago no shops had shutters- they didn't need them. It is because of all the asbos roaming the streets drunk and smashing anything that takes their fancy.
The sop owners need this protection now, sad though it is.
