THE VERDICT: Wanderers 2, Sunderland 0

AS parting shots go, it could not have been more impressive or more important.

Gary Megson asked wantaway striker, El-Hadji Diouf, to sign off in style and the Senegal striker did just that, scoring the goal that all but secured Wanderers' Premiership survival.

Nothing short of a last-day disaster can stop them celebrating their great escape at Stamford Bridge on Sunday and, although he is adamant that he will not be around next season to enjoy the rewards, Diouf will always be remembered in these parts for having played such a major role in the mission.

He will also be remembered for other less savoury aspects of his nature but, on this occasion, one of football's so-called bad boys lived up to his reputation as the Reebok's loveable rogue with a top-class performance and a world-class finish, just when it was needed.

And all on the 50th anniversary of the 1958 FA Cup Final victory - the last time Wanderers won a major trophy.

"The goal was important for me and important for Bolton," Diouf said, dedicating the performance to his family and to the fans.

"Today we told people that we wanted to stay in the Premier League. We didn't want to play in the UEFA Cup and go down in the same season.

"When you look at the last four games, you could see we wanted it. Before that, everybody thought we would go down but we believed in ourselves."

It was only his sixth goal of the season and his first in the league since he scored in the 3-1 defeat at Sunderland in December, but it was as valuable as any contribution he has made to the Bolton cause since he arrived from Liverpool four years ago.

"A £40million goal!" was how Jonathan Pierce described it to Match of the Day viewers, illustrating the financial consequence of relegation to the Championship.

More than that, considering that if and when they do come to negotiate Diouf's transfer, Wanderers will be in a much stronger position to demand a big profit on their £3.5m investment than if they were conducting a fire sale.

No fears of that now. Megson's men are safe, barring a disaster of titanic proportions next Sunday, and "Ginger Mourinho" will get the opportunity he yearned for, to shape things to his own liking.

Yes, they could get a beating at Chelsea and Reading could win at Derby while rejuvenated Fulham could win at Portsmouth. But Wanderers' goal difference is such that it would take an 11-goal swing for Steve Coppell's Royals to overtake them and there's less chance of that happening than there is of Diouf being persuaded to stay.

They have done it the hard way and there have been tough times along the way, but Wanderers have survived one of their most traumatic seasons of modern times with their Premiership status intact.

That in itself, given the destabilising events of the last year, should be seen as success. And, although he believes the accolades should go to his never-say-die players, Megson deserves the lion's share of the credit.

Wanderers were fighting a relegation battle when he replaced Sammy Lee in October and, although he inspired a mini-revival that nudged them towards mid-table, a nightmare run of eight games that delivered just a single point culminated in a morale-shattering 4-0 defeat at Aston Villa that made them odds-on favourites for the drop.

They needed a miracle but, somehow, the manager - under pressure from all quarters including sections of his own supporters - re-emphasised his back-to-basics philosophy and inspired a run of four of the unlikeliest results.

There was no Jussi Jaaskelainen or Ricardo Gardner, no Kevin Davies for two of the games and the natives were getting decidedly restless. But gutsy victories over West Ham and Middlesbrough showed the players and their fans united in adversity before the luckiest of draws at Spurs ensured their destiny was back in their own hands.

They were out of the bottom three and, once clear, they were determined there would be no slip-ups.

It helped knowing, when they kicked off on Saturday evening, that Reading had lost at home to Spurs and Fulham had beaten Birmingham. All that remained was for Wanderers to beat Sunderland and the job was done.

That was easier said than done. Until Daryl Murphy deflected Matt Taylor's corner over the line eight minutes from time, Sunderland's penchant for late strikes - nine of their points this season were achieved with goals in the last five minutes - looked ominous.

It was nail-biting at the time but, on reflection, once Diouf broke the deadlock three minutes before half time, Wanderers were not going to be denied.

They had only had one decent scoring chance, spurned when Davies - playing with a light splint on his broken hand - headed Diouf's cross over the bar from a great position, and the supporters were starting to voice their anxieties.

But frustration turned to celebration when Davies knocked the ball wide for Kevin Nolan and set off into the box in the hope of getting on the end of the eventual cross.

The inspirational Nolan duly delivered, but the ball was too high for Davies and fell instead for Diouf, who took a touch to compose himself before placing a rising, angled right-footer across Craig Gordon high into the net.

Roy Keane promised his players would not lie down but, what he could not guarantee was a performance.

Thankfully, Sunderland were poor, very poor, appalling in fact.

Better teams would have punished Wanderers for repeatedly giving the ball away in a nerve-wracking second half.

But the only time Ali Al-Habsi's goal came under serious threat was on 70 minutes, when Roy O'Donovan teed-up Andy Reid's cross and Kenwyne Jones failed to connect with the goal at his mercy.

It crossed the mind that Diouf's chance in the 54th minute, when he headed Taylor's cross onto the post, might prove costly.

But the pressure was off when Murphy and Gordon got in each other's way and Taylor's corner deflected off the striker's head and over the line, before Reid hacked it away.

Fortunately, the referee's assistant John Flynn was perfectly positioned to signal "goal" and the celebrations began in earnest.

Minds flashed back to "goal that never was" in September 1997 - in that identical spot - that robbed Wanderers of points that eventually led to them being relegated on goal difference at Chelsea on the last day of the season.

To their credit, the officials got this one spot on. So, unless things go horribly wrong, there will be no tears at Stamford Bridge this time.

Summed it up well Gordon.

An embarrasing disaster of a season which has ended well. Now there needs to be a re-assesment.

The board has to invest in a top quality striker and the dead wood has to go.

Out of the door should go Rasiak, Braaten, Alonso and Cohen.

Jussi, Campo and Stelios will go with the blessing of all fans for their giant contributions over the years - modern day heroes alongside the likes of Frandsen and Djorkaeff.

So Megon will be given time and the fans MUST back him. Let's give him a season to prove what he's worth. He seems to have a good nose in the transfer market and with the likes of Cahill and Al Habsi to build on, he's got a good chance of turning us into the mid table club we all want to be.

i'm prepared to give him a chance (10 games the same lsl got) but i suspect he will prove the majority of people right with an equally poor season next season, i think megson supporters dont realise the huge advantage we have because of tv money over championship teams that come up, therefore we have massively underachieved as have middlesbrough, newcastle and tottenham. look forward to my season ticket going down 10% hopefully, that will make it lowest in premier i suspect maybe with exception of wigan and blackburn.

Darkside must be gutted!!!! I mean he hired Negson to send us down in my opinion...... His inept team selection putting Rasiak in and leaving Dioufy on the bench regardless of our current hot form on paper didn't make sense to us fans. I feel Negson does need to leave has i feel the lads produced the goods not him and fought for there right to be premiership players again next season. The question is who would replace him???? The only thing's he did right by the fans is convince Cahill & Steinson & Taylor in to our squad. Taylor although had rare flashes of what he is about now has the summer to build on a fresh start for the club. The transfer window should be exciting and show us fans if our club show ambition ( i won't hold my breath when it comes to funds available) 15m to spare before any other cash is put on the table should get us some decent players!!! Sorry to all Negson fans but his mistakes could have cost us dearly and on that note should leave by mutual consent. Look at chelsea and there manager 2nd in the league and in the Champions League Final and his job is more or less over regardless of result's/cup's etc....... The message is simple Clear out!!!!!

Chelsea v Bolton next and NO worries for me all week long, if indeed we had not taken 10 points out of 12 in the last 4 games then it would have been a very different story, so happy that my club will once again be in the Premiership next season which is positive to say the least, Megson got his first victory for Bolton with a win against Man.Utd at home, something that we had not achieved for around 30 years and even if he played the reserves in Europe he did take us further than what Sam had ever done, not to mention having his 80% goal ratio man sold from under his feet, also made 3 good signings all these are facts, not me bulling Megson up who is taking an awful lot of stick from this forum, alright he is not my cup of tea but I know that we are all targeting the wrong fella here, it is of course Gartside who employed him and it is Gartside who we should all be pointing the finger at even though we have survived by the smallest of margins. Non the less we are Premiership status so let's act like we are supporters and not like fans who have just seen our team relegated.

"...Megson deserves the lion's share of the credit."

Which team have you been watching Gordon? We are staying up DESPITE Negson. Imagine where we would have been if our Board had waited a week or so, shown AMBITION and brought in a PROPER manager??!! Look what even Steve Bruce has done at Wigan. Luck with other results in the last two weeks, some huge luck that Boro and Spurs did not get a feast of goals and the never say die attitude of the players, playing for the shirt and the club, but certainly not for Negson, have kept us up in spite of all the rantings and self congratulations of Mugson.

Red nose said last week he knew of at least one chairman who picked the team, but he would not mention who. I have been thinking about this - I reckon, it could be Gartside. Nothing would surprise me, especially if you listen to the rumours around the Sporting Lisbon line up. And frankly, who else could it be?

Forget, United & Arsenal. Chelsea, I doubt, otherwise you'd see a lot more of Schevchenko. Liverpool, too much infighting. Everton, stable, as for Villa, Blackburn & Portsmouth. Same with Tottenham, Newcastle. That leaves Derby...I doubt it, Birmingham and Fulham. Cannot see it at Reading, West Ham or Wigan or Boro or Sunderland, leaving just Man City and ourselves.

I suppose City could be candidates on that basis of that tool who owns them, but I think the generally accepted opinion of Megson being Gartside's lap dog....it would not surprise me in the least.

When listing players to go, is this based on their respective ability or on the fact that Megson wont give them a chance? Alonso looked a decent back up player to me, as did Bratten. Far better than O'Brien and Cohen. And why should Stelios leave? If we could get rid of Megson there would surely be a chance of keeping Stelios, still 1 of our best attacking players. We need to get rid of our negative manager before he gets rid of all our attack minded players.
Posted by: matty_c, Bolton on 7:17pm Mon 5 May 08
getting rid of megson wont encourage any players to stay, stelios wont stay a bench players next year and i dont think we should try and make an ageing player a 1st teamer to keep him sweet, as for alonso and braaten, alonso had 1 decent game against everton, against munich he was useless as was braaten both of them should go as neither are good enough to cut it in the premier league
Posted by: dknight, Leicester on 7:37pm Mon 5 May 08
Congratulions to Gary and all the players.Shame about Stelios leaving he,s been a credit to himself for coming on against spurs and scoring that priceless goal he really is worth his weight in gold.Diouff as well you will never play in front of better fans.If you look at what Bolton did against Spurs and boro last season it seems that Gary megsons determination has rubbed off onto the players and if stelios and diouff can stay for one more season and add to this squad a forward like gudjohnson Bolton can repeat as much sucess as in the Allardyce days.Everybody at this club have seen what the extra effort and determination these players have achieved then the goal of a top 6 finish can be achieved that current form has seen.Lets keep this determination against Chelsea.

Nolan was excellent - Diouf was immense.
The credit for staying up has to go to the players, not the manager and certainly not the chairman or chief exec. The board have done everything they could do this season to make it as hard as possible to stay up. When your best player is sold and we couldnt score, the players who stepped up, are the ones who should get the credit.

This should not been seen as success, it is just above failure, there are 6-7 teams who we should be above, this was just the bare minimum. We havent forgot what they did in Lisbon.

Also excellent to see Diouf sign out with that performance. Surely all the Nolan doubters must now see that he is the best, creative midfielder we have, and the team wouldnt have won without him. In a game were we looked like we were going to struggle to score, one touch which controled the ball and beat the man, then put in that excellent ball for Dioufy, lets get behind him next season.

Finally, its that point in the season were the rumours start, obviiously we will be buying a striker, i think we might end up wih either Roberts or Lita, but i would much prefer the cheaper option of Ebanks-Blake, (who i campaigned to buy in January) or ideally. bringing back Gudjohnsen. Lets wait and see.

BWFC-TIL, what's this about you being a closet red? Surely things aint that bad?

Aidan, the only thing Saturday proved about Nolan is that he certainly isnt a central midfielder, but can be useful out wide.

Should be a great midfield next season with Cohen and Joey in for Ivan and Guthrie. Another cracking striker signing in the mode of Rasiak will see Davo pushed out to wing back again and good job we're getting rid of the only creative forward we have. We must have plenty more donkeys who can replace Dioufy.

Cant wait !!!!

How can he think Joey O'brien and Cohen can cut it in the centre midfield role.

lets replace anelka with Razi kack.

At the game on Saturday and watching it after (I recorded it from Setanta before any smart Alec says how did you do that) and quite frankly it was clear that none on the pitch were listening to Negson. Several times he turned away in frustration from the pitch after trying to give instructions throwing his arms up in the air. It was Nolan and Cahill doing the organising on the pitch. I still reckon it was the lads who preserved our place in the Prem and not that clueless excuse for a Gartside 'Yes' man. I reckon that Rasiak and Cohen were his way fo trying to split up the lads by him imposing his selection on the team, trying to prove his position. If we had gone down then Negson would have been paid off and gone (reliable source). That means we have him for next year but I also understand that they are going to rotate the members of the board and after the stick dished out to Gartside he is stepping back and another person will be Chair. It still means situation normal unfortunately as it will still be another of the clueless morons who don't understand how 'fickle' we fans can be.

Every manager has played Joey O'Brien ahead of Andranik. There must be a reason for that. Andranik hasn't had his chance, fair enough, but 3 managers haven't picked him regularly in his time at the club. The team selection against Sunderland was the perfect one, a couple of bad selections before that but we've stayed up and therefore Megson has done his job for this season. Next season, his job will be to get us back into the top 10. He signed some decent players and will now sign a striker or two in the summer and we will be back to the team we used to be, or near enough. Stability will get us back to where we can be. Sacking managers all the time doesnt work, look at Leicester, 7 managers this season, relegated. Look at us, 3 managers this season, nearly relegated. We changed things at the end of last season and things ballsed up. Lets not let that happen again.

I accidentally read Julie Moores comments, and yet again complete drivvle. How can you still say Nolan isnt a central midfielder. He has missed a few games this season through injury and suspension. Could you please remind me of one occasion were Bolton have looked like a threatening premiership side, without Nolan in the side. He is our best player - enough. Davo is the fans favourite, he missed two games recently - 4 points, the two previous games with Nolan a couple of weeks earlier, 0 points. What else has the guy to do, i just hope the negative, idiots who have slagged off Nolan do keep there promise, AND STAY AWAY NEXT SEASON.

I will never back megson! People are deluded if they feel the 10 points have anything to do with him! a) the players pulled their socks up and b) we played some poor oposition!

MEGSON KEPT REMINDING US EVERY WEEK WHEN WE WHERE GETTING BEAT

"its nothing to do with me todays result, the players are the ones who have togo out and win"

MESSAGE FOR MEGSON

"our safety has nothing to do with you, it was the players who did it off their own back"

Anyone who feels he did a good job compare him to steve bruce - both got 31 points since taking over at their respective clubs (megson had more games)

- bruce had marcus bent megson had anelka

- infact megson had a much stronger squad all together

-Megson spent 3 times as much money in January

The man is a joke and he will only take us 1 way - DOWN! 36 points our worst since 95/96 - with our strongest squad!

i agree good comment. to many neg heads on here all they can do is blast nolan and megson! nolan is a good player and the manager megson as turned it around. some of the players think they are better than they are and i think megsons found it hard with so many thinking they should be playing week in week out even if we are losing and im sure nolan as helped in out on that score.

lets hope megson gets some good players ! the anelka money is still there so that could be two good players, striker and midfielder i wreckon ! al habsi needs to practise his kicking all summer because everygame at least once he scuffs it, good shot stopper tho. great to see everyone celebrating but it's in the past now, lets look forward ! the likes of campo, stelios, diouf seem to be in the past now, lets get some creativity in the pack ! i for one would love bullard, not sure he'll come back north tho, the st.etienne lad (GOMIS) looks good on youtube, but you only see the goals, youtube would make even rasiak look good, perhaps not haha ! 9 mil might be a big risk though ! alan smith could fill the diouf spot too maybe, any ideas guys ?
