BOLTON has a rich and vibrant diversity of residents and here in June 1988 we can see a group of from the Irish community taking part in an Irish dancing session in Bolton Town Hall Square as part of the Bolton Irish Festival.

The high spot of the event was the "piping in" of the Mayor Councillor Brian Allanson, to the Town Hall steps where he was presented with a plaque by Cllr Pat Bradley of Newry, County Down.

Cllr Bradley stressed the links between Bolton and Warrenpoint in County Down.

During the traditional Bolton holiday fortnight, in the late 1940s and early 1950s many local people visited Ireland and some stayed and made their homes there.

Over in Ireland there were photographs discovered of holidays taken at Warrenpoint in the 1940s and in 1988 efforts were being made to attract Bolton people to that part of the world again and to strengthen the ties between the two places.

The week-long series of events in 1988 included a performance of "The Playboy of the Western World" at the Albert Hall in Bolton.
