THIS photograph is sure to raise a smile — how can you help but smile when you see the jolly faces of these pensioners.

They were members of one of the country's oldest Morris Dance troupes — the Howfen Belles — who regularly met to put on bells and costumes and danced the afternoon away in 1987.

Sylvia Birtwistle was the oldest member of the group, at 73, with Alice Houghton the youngest at 65.

They all belonged to senior citizens clubs in the Westhoughton area and formed their dance team while away on holiday in St Annes earlier that year.

They regularly met at the home of one of the team, Edna Irwin, for their practices.

Morris Dancing has always been a popular pastime in Bolton but is it still as popular today as it was?
