HERE we have wedding belle Angela Stewart tying the knot with Civil War Society chairman Peter Smith at St Thomas' Church in Eskrick Street in 1991.

The church is celebrating its 140th anniversary this year and couples married at the church are invited to join in an event to mark this achievement.

Hundreds of guests from all over the world war traditional costumes for this special event and even no-society members joined in the spirit of the occasion by dressing up for the day.

The church was transformed into a scene straight from Gone with the Wind for the spectacular wedding.

Peter had founded the English branch of the movement 17 years prior to this photograph being taken and the couple met through the society.

They decided to time their wedding to coincide with the tour by the American branch because they had many friends across the Atlantic.

At the time the bride, Angela, said: "We have had a few society weddings but never anything on this scale." Her two young sons, Steven and Anthony, were pageboys for the big day.
