HERE we see the jubilant Horwich and Westhoughton Round Table team collecting a cheque from brewery managing director Mr David Stephenson.

This took place in September 1987 and shows members of the Round Table who won £750 in a beat-the-clock race from Newcastle to Amsterdam.

They came third, competing against 26 other Rotary Clubs from all over Britain.

The event — the Great Newcastle Brown Ale Race — was organised by the brewery to celebrate both the diamond jubilee of Rotary and the brewery.

Each team had to collect a crate of ale from Newcastle and then head for Europe's diamond capital across the English Channel.

Organisations such as the Round Table have always been hugely popular in Bolton and its surrounding districts. They provide a valuable service to charity fund-raising all year round.

Were you in the winning team or do you have memories of the Round Table from years gone by? We would love to hear your memories.
