WE wonder how many of our readers remember the Women's League of Health and Beauty.

It was very popular in the 1960s and 1970s and this photograph taken in April 1975 shows give members of the class in Bolton enjoying the exercises and keeping nice and trim.

Long before the current craze for gyms and zumba had us all pumping iron and running on treadmills this particular fitness regime was hugely popular among local women.

The system was devised by Mrs Bagot Stack in 1930 and offered an exercise regime for girls from the age of 13 to well after retirement age.

Miss Kathleen Winstanley ran health and beauty groups in Bolton, Wigan, Manchester and Stockport and said at the time of our photograph: "We don't want to build up bulging muscles as more masculine-inspired methods of keeping fit tend to do."

Picture are five class members (from left): Marion Millington, Joan Hutchinson, Ethel Livesey, Doreen Hill and Jillian Woodend.

We know it was a gentle form of exercise but little else about it. Perhaps our readers can help fill us in. Get in touch with Gayle McBain on 01204 537269 or email gayle.mcbain@nqnw.co.uk
