THIS photograph brought back fond memories for 82-year-old Doreen Russell.

For it shows a young Doreen — she was aged just two-and-a-half at the time the photograph was taken in 1935 —

crossing the road, holding the hand of her mother, Margaret (Maggie) Hacking.

The picture was taken outside the post office in Deansgate, Bolton town centre and illustrated the new "belisha" crossing which was in the process of being installed.

Doreen was a toddler living with her mother and father (Joseph, known as Joe) in Bury New Road, Bolton.

"I'm guessing we either walked into town or got the bus. We certainly didn't have a car and I was about 17 when I first rode in a car," says Doreen, who lives with her 84-year-old husband, Colin, in Over Hulton.

Doreen was the middle child of seven. She had three brothers and three sisters and two sisters and one brother are still alive.

It was her younger sister, Kathleen, who helped decide that the photograph showed a young Doreen and their mother.

"I don't know who the other woman is, pushing the pram, but I'm guessing it could have been a neighbour and the dog could have belonged to her," she adds.

Doreen said it is possible they were going shopping at the open market which, at that time, was further up the road she says.

"I think it was where the car park is today," she explains.

Doreen was a pupil at The Haulgh Council School and left when she was aged 14 going to work in a mill and a bakery.

Her father worked as a bill poster and her mother stayed at home to care for the children and the home.

Doreen and Colin have two sons, three grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

"It was a lovely surprise to see the photograph in the paper. I don't remember it being taken but I'm guessing we were off for a shopping trip in town," she says.
