HORWICH, for so many years the home of the Loco Works, had its own station.

This was prior to Dr Beeching making his infamous cuts to the railway system in the 1960s.

In 1963, when this picture was taken, around 20 trains arrived and departed from Horwich each day carrying around 500 railway employees.

But the main fear of local folk was that the closure of the station would mean the loss of the special "holiday trains".

We know that there are many Bolton News' readers who are railway enthusiasts and will be able to recall the Horwich Station that we see here in our picture.

If so please get in touch as it would lovely to include your memories in a future edition of Looking Back. We would also love to hear from anyone with any memories of other, now closed, stations and what the impact was of those closures on local people and local towns and districts.
