THIS photograph found in our archives was taken in May 1971.

More than 3,000 people attended an exhibition of model railways held by Bolton and District Model Railway Club in the Drill Hall, Silverwell Street in Bolton.

There were three private layouts and club models were on display. Part of the hall was used as a cinema.

It was the first time the club had held such an exhibition and it is clear it was a very popular judging by the number of people who turned up to have a look.

Club secretary, Mr Frank Shuttleworth said at the time: "The exhibition, the first one we've held, has been a big success.

"It was of particular interest to families with young children."

All money raised from the exhibition helped to improve the club's facilities.

Were you a member of the club and do you think there is still a keen interest in railways today?

We are hoping to write several features about Bolton's railways in a forthcoming edition of Looking Back so would love to hear from you.
