THERE are some mysteries that need a great deal of delving to solve.

Here is one that reader Peter Winstanley is hoping Looking Back readers will be able to help with.

Peter is hoping to track down the owner of a silver medal found in Deane.

The unusual thing about this solid silver medal is that although it was found in Bolton it does not originate from the town.

It does, in fact, originate from a town close to where Peter's brother lives in Kent.

The medal was discovered by a pal of Peter's, in Hawthorne Road, Deane some time ago.

"It was only when I was chatting with him in the pub and I mentioned I was going down to see my brother that he remembered the medal," says 61-year-old Peter.

His pal left the King's Head in Deane — where they were enjoying a pint — went home and returned with the medal to show Peter.

"I said I'd try to find out something about it for him and hopefully find the person it belongs to," he explains.

Peter's brother, Michael is busy trying to find out more down in Sidcup and now he is hoping local folk might have some information.

The medal is inscribed with Deal, Walmer and District Victoria Hospital Cup Competition on one side. On the other side there is the inscription "Runners Up Senior Shield 1938-39".

But how did the medal get from Kent to Bolton?

Peter has his own theory, but it is just a theory of course.

"I know that during World War Two men who were not serving in the forces did go down to Kent to work.

"Perhaps this belonged to someone who went down from Bolton to Kent and then came home with the medal, having taken part in this competition," he suggests.

Hopefully there will be someone in Bolton who can shed some light on the mystery medal and its owner.

Perhaps it means something to one of our Looking Back readers or you know something about this cup competition.
