CUTE little Benny Cubbins proved to be just as handy with a spanner as his grandfather, Harry Cubbins, who is sitting beside him in this photograph from our archives.

They were preparing the tracks for the Lancashire Lad — a steam engine that would take part in the 1953 Bolton Fair.

Standing behind the pair is Benny's dad while watching the preparations with a keen eye is Markets' Superintendent Mr John Stewart.

The tiny two-year-old was following in a family tradition which involved fairs. The Cubbins' family was a famous fair family and well known in the Bolton area and grandfather, 59-year-old Harry Cubbins, no stranger to many folk in Bolton.

The fair was a hugely popular event that attracted many people to the town as well as providing entertainment for families who lived here.
