BROMLEY Cross residents were fighting a plan by Bolton Council to build shops on the car park at Bromley Cross Station in February 1975.

They had organised a petition to present to Greater Manchester Council's Chief Executive Sir George Ogden.

One of the organisers, Mr Graham Coomer, of Windy Harbour Lane in Bromley Cross told the Bolton Evening News, at the time, that the petition had already been signed by almost 300 people and that he had hoped to obtain another 200 names bringing the final total to around 500.

"Reduction of parking spaces goes against Government policy of increasing the use of public transport and it would increase the danger to school children crossing the road," he explained.

Bolton Council Planning Committee had recently granted planning permission for three shops which would reduce the number of parking spaces from 40 to just 24 which residents felt was not enough to accommodate the passengers using this very popular little station.

The picture shows Mr Coomer adding the signature of Mrs Joan Elworthy of Chapeltown Road in Bromley Cross to the petition.
