TODAY'S Looking Back photograph shows a street in Bolton that will be familiar to many people.

This is Lonsdale Road in Heaton and the picture was taken back in September 1976.

This row of terraced properties could be any of many streets and roads in Bolton as it shows a very familiar house style that can be seen throughout the town.

It is interesting when visiting other towns in the North West to see just how the local industry has influenced the style of housing built for the population.

It is quite clear in Bolton that the mills had a very important influence on this as we have a large number of small terraced properties — which would once have been two up two down houses with an outside toilet and no bathroom — as well as the much larger homes that can be found on roads such as Chorley New Road which were once owned by the mill owners.

Although the mill owners' homes were much more grand their occupants still wanted to live close to work and many were built on roads leading into town centres.
