WHEN we featured a story about Aults in Bolton memories were revived for one of our readers.

Martyn Goodram explains that his memories are not particularly connected to the shop but to owner Duncan Ault’s younger brother, William.

He said: “We both went to the same primary school — Church Road — and we were best friends.

“We always sat together, always played together and spent many times at each other’s houses.

“His house was in Smithills, in Recar Road I believe.

“I remember his grandmother lived in Abbotsford Road.”

Martyn says the pair lost contact at the age of 11 when they both went their separate ways into secondary school education.

“I went to Smithills High School after failing my 11 plus but I think William went to Bolton School,” he says.

Martyn took on an engineering apprenticeship at Edbro, then went on to Royal Mail after redundancy.

“I stayed for 26 years working in management at the delivery office.

“I left Royal Mail in 2008 to set up my own business and I am now looking to retire at the end of the financial year.”

Martyn hopes to be able to make contact with William again and catch up on all the lost time.

Ault’s is still a thriving business that has been in the family for 125 years.

It was set up by Duncan and William’s great grandparents in 1891 in the spot it occupies today in Newport Street.
