IT is always fascinating to discover that the most innocuous photograph provides the most interest to our readers.
This was the case with the picture showing coaches en route to the seaside but snapped in Scholes Bank, Horwich.
David Leeming was one of our readers who had memories of the convoys of coaches that would pass through the town.
He said: “Being brought up in Horwich, I well remember similar scenes on this road with vehicles heading downhill from the Crown Hotel.
“The stone house on the right was locally known as 'The Waterworks House' and 'Liverpool Waterworks’ maintenance workshop was roughly opposite.
“The Squirrel Hotel used to cater for coach parties on return journeys from the sea-side,” he explains.
During Bolton Wakes’ weeks many private coaches and Ribble Buses would travel along this road, says David and their destination would, usually, be Blackpool or Southport or Morecambe.
On return the vehicles would find Scholes Bank hard to climb and would have to stop at the Crown Hotel to allow their engines to cool, he adds.
Today, with the motorway network. it is impossible to imagine having to travel by the back roads to Blackpool and the inordinate amount of time that would take. It was common for buses to transport folk to the seaside. If you have memories of coachtrips let us know. Contact Gayle McBain on 01204 537269 or email gayle.mcbain@nqnw.co.uk
