LAST week we started our look at Bolton Lions — the parent organisation is celebrating its centenary this year.

This charitable organisation does some incredible work for needy causes not least the Caring Christmas Appeal helping hundreds of families each year.

The group is relied upon to bring some festive cheer to the children who, without their help, would face a very dismal Christmas.

It is an appeal they ran, in conjunction with The Bolton News, for more than 30 years and is probably their best known charitable work.

They also organise the much appreciated Hospital Radio at the Royal Bolton Hospital which for years was run by Jim Wells. Although Jim has died — his name was given to the radio station’s venue in his memory — it is still a very vital part of the Lions’ work.

The Lions are hoping this year will see more members join the team so that they can continue to carry out the good work they have been involved in for almost 50 years in Bolton and 100 years nationally.

They would love to have more younger members too.

The charity helps provide vital equipment for people in need, including hospital beds at home, and organises various fund raising events throughout the year to do this.
