OUR photographs of town centre streets and roads are always well received by Looking Back readers, so we feel sure today’s snaps of Bradshawgate will prove interesting. Here we see Bradshawgate in a shot facing out of town and featuring the long-since-closed Lido cinema (later Studio 1,2 &3 and then the Cannon Cinema), as well as a photo facing the opposite way. We do not have a date for the top image and hope you might be able to help . . . perhaps the vehicles will assist ?
Meanwhile, the other picture was taken in July 1959. What particularly struck us was the woman wearing the rather splendid hat on the left of the photograph and Prestons in the distance — once a major feature of Bolton’s town centre until its recent demise.
If the vehicles weren't shown and the people wearing clothing typical of the 1950s it would still be easy to name the street, as the buildings look much the same today as they did then. It is just the goods sold that have changed.
