HERE we see Mr Thomas Ormesher, pictured left, examining a completed pair of clogs at the Bolton Clog Company Works.
The company was in Ainsworth Lane in Bolton and we can see his partner, Mr George Gill, operating a machine which cuts out the “uppers”.
From what we have gathered clogs were the foot wear of choice for many Bolton adults and children, not least because they were so hard wearing and would last the long journeys to either work and school and back.
They were also a great choice for working in the mills as they were a particularly sturdy form of foot wear.
We would love to hear from you if you have any memories of wearing traditional clogs or if you know anything about the tradition.
There would be many clog makers in the area and they would fashion each pair of clogs by hand from leather.
They were particular popular in this area.
