TODAY’S Looking Back photograph is fascinating on a number of different levels.

It features a street scene from as long ago as 1890 and the picture was taken in Little Lever.

In fact, the photograph was taken looking up Fletcher street and the Little Lever precinct was, eventually, built where the house in the back ground can be seen in the image.

This appears to be some sort of village celebration but we are not sure exactly what was going on or what celebration it was.

We are particularly struck by the women who are all wearing shawls around their heads.

Was it, perhaps, a very cold day or was this traditional head gear worn in the area around this time?

It seems there is a rather smartly dressed man in the middle of the crowd so perhaps he was the reason for the gathering.
