THESE young lads were thrilled to bits with their catch of the day.

A group of hopeful young anglers trooped down to the Bury-Bolton canal to test their cunning and to compete for the Little Lever Inter-Schools Angling Trophy back in June, 1979.

The twice yearly event celebrated its 10th anniversary with 28 competitors, including two girls, taking part.

They were in teams of four from each of the Little Lever school and they were testing each other’s cunning by the water’s edge for the day.

The winning team after a total of two hours’ fishing was Masefield Primary School.

The individual winner was 11-year-old Colin Brooks, who was also from Masefield Primary School.

He caught two generously sized tench which brought the total for the match to 2lb 11 oz.

The individual second place went to 10-year-old Tony Graveson, of Mytham Primary School, whose team also took second place.

Paul Jones, aged 13, from Little Lever Secondary School, was third.
