READING about brave soldier Peter Walker in Looking Back gave Susan Lowe another link in her family tree hunting mission.

For the article also mentioned a James Martindale and James was Susan’s uncle.

We had been featuring the story of Peter Walker who never returned home from the First World War as told by his grandson Roy.

Sadly Peter died in France on February 24, 1916 and Roy is trying to find out more about his grandfather’s short life.

He has a detailed diary which his grandfather wrote while he was in the trenches and in this Peter spoke of a Private James Martindale of Parkinson Street in Bolton who was apparently on hospital guard duty. Perhaps the pair were pals.

James was the “much older” brother of Susan’s mother whom she never knew as she was born in 1914.

Sadly James also never returned home to Bolton and Susan visited his grave in 1999 at St Vaast Military Cemetery in France. So many young men and boys would never make it back to their families. Susan has a photograph of her uncle.

“James Martindale is on the left of the picture below I do not know the man next to him.

"It would be great if it was Peter Walker but if not may be a Looking Back reader will recognise him,” she says.
