THIS street was in Bolton town centre.

Today there are very few people live right in the centre of our town but it was a common thing in the early part of the 20th century.

In fact this photograph was taken in May 1967 when demolition experts were urging the public to take care as they were demolishing in this clearance site.

This was Churchgate where at one time many people lived but their homes were finally demolished and they moved on.

It must have been incredibly handy to live so close to the town centre and all the shops and leisure amenities that were on hand.

There are still people living in the town centre but far fewer than there were in the 1940s and 1950s for instance.

Although the sign on the left warns people to beware because of the demolition work is seem the woman walking along with her shopping basket in her hand is not too worried about it at all.
