TODAY’S Looking Back photograph will be interesting to many of our readers.
It is doubtful if anyone will recognise this shop.
The picture was taken at Christmas 1895 and is of Carrie’s grocery store which stood at the corner of Corporation Street and Market Street.
Founder John Carrie was responsible for building this particular store and how fascinating does it look?
It looks as if it sold many different things and would be a fascinating place to visit.
John Carrie originated in Arbroath, Scotland before coming to England in 1847.
He raised his family in Bolton.
At one time his building business was deemed to be the biggest in Lancashire.
In fact so famous was John Carrie that press notices of his death in 1893 appeared all over the country.
In the late 19th century shops such as this would be all over the Bolton area giving residents the opportunity to buy everything they needed in one place.
