THIS picture shows an area of Harwood from almost 100 years ago.

Here we see Riding Gate and the “old cottages” as revealed in the caption to this photograph which was taken in May 1928.

Riding Gate is, today, a far more contemporary-style road but in the 1920s it was dotted with these ancient cottages that could have dated back centuries by the looks of them.

Harwood was a much more rural village than it is today.

It had far fewer residents and although not far from Bolton had its own identity. But does anyone know where some of the names of its roads and streets came from?

We are thinking, particularly, about Riding Gate or Lea Gate.

Did these names have a particular meaning and if so what were they?

Perhaps you have always lived in Harwood and know the answer to these questions?

We always enjoy talking to people who have knowledge about their home town.
