THIS photograph shows workers leaving a very famous old work place in the Bolton area but where was it?

Many of our readers will know that this was a picture of employees leaving the Horwich Loco Works.

We do not have a date for the photograph but the clothing being worn could perhaps help date it.

Horwich Works was a railway works built in 1886 by the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway (LYR) in Horwich when the company moved from its original works at Miles Platting, Manchester.

The works was built on a large plot of land bought in April 1884 for £36,000.

Horwich Loco Works helped to bring employment to many local families and when it closed, in the 1980s it was a sad day for the town and those who worked there.

It was the end of an era.
