THIS fun game was all the rage when our picture was taken back in August 1974.

Piggy, the once almost extinct Lancashire sport, made another stride towards new popularity at Egerton Cricket Club, according to the caption on this photograph.

Around 200 spectators watched 20 six-man teams do battle in Turton Sports Council’s senior Piggy championships.

Few of them had even heard of Piggy before the game was revived by the Council two years prior to this.

Several closely fought contests prevented the organisers from completing the championships on one night.

The senior quarter-finals and the semi-finals had to be played at the same venue the following week.

Here we see David Whittle of the Recreation A team in action during the Piggy championship in Egerton.

Piggy is an interesting game which is similar to rounders or cricket.
