MYSTERY surrounds these gate posts spotted outside a car showroom in Bolton.

Honda in Folds Road, Bolton, has these ornate and charming gate posts leading up to its premises.

But no one seems to know what they represent and why they are there.

Now we are hoping Looking Back readers with a great knowledge of the Bolton area will be able to fill in the gaps for us.

Many people pass these stone built gate posts on a regular basis but might not have spotted what has carefully been engraved on them.

From what we can see they are sporting emblems.

They appear to show various sporting necessities such as bats and rackets.

Was this once a sporting venue before it was taken over for a more commercial use?

We know there are various interesting pieces of history dotted about Bolton which we love to feature on a regular basis in Looking Back. Recently we featured some interesting stone work that graces Smithills and asked what they were there for.

We then discovered they were, in fact, boundary markings and not the historical artefacts some of our readers assumed they were.

Perhaps this was the entrance to a tennis club or a general sports’ venue.

Or did it have any relevance to sport at all and were the emblems there for some other interesting reason?

If you know something about these posts — which we assume have been in situ for many decades — do get in touch and help us understand what stood there in the past.
