BOLTON was a major centre of textile manufacture, particularly cotton, from the Industrial Revolution until the 20th century.
During this time the town and surrounding towns were dominated by large brick-built factories as well as huge chimneys from which billowed clouds of smoke including William Holdsworth mill seen here. In 1929 Bolton had 247 cotton mills and by 2009 half were still there.
